Night time scene, V-Ray, Distributed bucket rendering, Distributed rendering, 3dsMAX Batch render, Scene states and Backburner…

What is the most effective solution for decreasing render times in a networked office of 30+ computers? VRay Distributed bucket rendering, Batch rendering and/or Back burner?

The following is an illustration of how I set these services up at our office, and testing to ascertain what solution would work best for us.

Firstly the benchmark, I am using a night scene that I completed a while ago which is not that efficient. On my HP xw6400 dual quad (xenon E5320@1.86GHz), with 6Gig of RAM workstation this render took 47min to complete when neither the irradiance map or Light cache are precalculated..

Once I had precalulated the irradiance map and light cache on the same scene using just my workstation, the same frame takes 3min 11 sec to render.

  • The irradiance map and light cache are saved and unc pathed.
  • Rendering with all eight cores on my pc working.
  • Task Manager showing 100% CPU and 2 gig RAM
  • Frame rendered in 3min 11 sec

    The memory management is exactly the exactly the issue that we where facing when running Vray DR as a service it was consuming too much RAM even when idle, this was slowing down all the pcs particularly noticeable to the Revit users.

    The technique that I am working on starts these services up remotely and hence solves the memory consumption issues.

    I have not resolved this yet, and I am currently in the process of moving country so will not be able to update this for a couple of weeks, if you are still interested I will email you once I have time to update and test this technique.

  2. We are testing the Vray DR ourselves and we would really appreciate it if you have any news on how to control memory consumption on the render slaves (because that is mostly the bottleneck)
