3ds Max will not zoom to the extents of your model?

Have you ever had the issue when working on an architecture model and you decide to incorporate large scale (2-3km+) context to find that you are unable to zoom any further in your model to see this context?

i.e. You have screen captured and montage a series of aerial photographs, applied it as a diffuse texture to a large plane (2-3kms in each direction) so that you can use it as a template to model surrounding buildings, roads… BUT 3dsMAX will simply not zoom out to show the extents of the site? MAX simple refuses to zoom any further?

Fortunately there is an easy fix.

IMPORTANT DO NOT CHANGE THE UNITS OF THE EXISTING FILE!

Open a new scene, Customize -> Units Setup

In the Units Setup dialogue box Open the System Unit Setup

In the System Unit Setup dialogue box change the 1 Unit = 1.0 Meters to 1 Unit = 1.0 Kilometers

Select ok and exit these dialogue boxes

File -> Merge… and select the entire contents of your previous troublesome scene…

Viola problem solved.

Note: You will need to reset your rendering/lighting settings as per your previous scene, you can if you are feeling lazy simply save a preset of your previous scene and load that into your new scene…
