Using a alpha channel for a custom background

Using a Alpha Channel for a custom background:

First thing you will notice is that the *png file is a significantly smaller file size. Open the *png in Photoshop and the background photo, using the move tool drag the photo onto the *png file. Note: The background is automatically cut out in the *png file, and yes I realise the perspective of the photo does not match but it is the closest image I have at the moment.

Ensure the render layer is above the photo of the background, and adjust the position and scale to suit.

Next we open the *tif file, Note: the background is not automatically cut out. Under the “Select” menu, choose “Load Selection…”, ensure “Alpha 1″ is selected under the “Channel:” and select ok. Since the render layer is locked, right click the Background layer, and choose “Layer From Background…”, ensuring the Alpha channel is still selected now select “Add layer mask”, and as before drag the background photo onto this *tiff file, checking the order of the layers and position to suit.

Save the file and you are all done.

download a *zip contaning the background alpha channel files (34)

If you wanted to you could use photos of any entourage, people, trees, shrubs… and using alpha channels (transparency/opacity) develop this 2D content to give you the illusion of 3D geometry similar to Archvisions rpcs but all within Photoshop as I did in this archived image.
